Arbor Day is on the way!

Arbor Day is typically celebrated on the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates throughout the year based on the best tree planting times in their area. Arbor Day is an American holiday where people are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Arbor Day was founded by J. Sterling Morton. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, J. Sterling Morton and his wife moved to the treeless prairies of the Nebraska Territory in 1854 where they quickly realized they missed the shade of the trees back home. They also noticed that trees were needed to act as windbreaks to stabilize the soil. In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed a holiday to plants trees in April and in 1885 Arbor Day became a legal holiday.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, trees clean our air and water, slow climate change, ease poverty and hunger, prevent species loss and feed the human soul. In the commercial property world, there are several benefits from trees. Trees provide oxygen, add value to the property, help reduce crime, help regulate the temperature around the property, assist with energy costs by using their natural shade, help direct storm runoff, cool parked cars which reduce evaporated gasoline that contributes to pollution and tree shade can also add longevity to paved surfaces.
What are you doing April 26? Let’s plant some trees!
